about sexual violence

RAINN defines sexual violence as “an all-encompassing, non-legal term that refers to crimes like sexual assault, rape, and sexual abuse.” Sexual violence is any type of unwanted sexual contact and it can happen to anyone and affect people of all genders and ages. A person may use force, threats, manipulation, or coercion to commit sexual violence and can be a stranger, acquaintance, family member, or even someone you trust.

types of sexual violence

Sexual Assault

Sexual assault is the unwanted sexual contact or behavior that happens without the consent of a person. A person can be sexually assaulted physically or verbally as well. Some forms can include:

  • Fondling or unwanted sexual touching

  • Forcing a victim to perform sexual acts, such as oral sex or penetrating the perpetrator’s body

  • Penetration of the victim’s body, also known as rape

Rape

Rape is a form of sexual assault and it means someone performing sexual penetration without consent. It is forced and implies that the victim was incapable of consenting, due to a person being impaired physically, mentally or emotionally. For example, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. With this being said, it is important to note that not all sexual assault is rape.

Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse is an unwanted sexual activity without given consent. Child sexual abuse is unwanted sexual activity with a minor, because children cannot consent to any form of sexual activity. By committing this crime, a perpetrator can cause a child to have lasting effects for years, including anxiety, fear or post-traumatic stress.

What is consent?

Consent is voluntary, mutual and a person can change their mind at any time. It is more than a yes or no and reasons someone might not be able to consent include fear, age, illness, disability, and the influence of alcohol or drugs.
